indo day 516…inner band geek comes out

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bppDVwPAY2Y&feature=plcp

Prior to dancing in a parade for last week’s carnival–delayed celebration for Indonesia’s Independence Day (or Kemerdekaan)–I prepared my students with a little marching band motivation…
Dressed in red and white they were beaming with nationalism and later dripping with sweat after a 4km route with a back to back dance routine. Although no fire trucks were paraded, there were unusual characters, accidental steps in horse dung, flying candy, and teams of teachers with H2O ready to hydrate! I was feeling quite nostalgic.

serving as if 3 months remain

I hadn’t talked over Skype with anyone from my family for what seemed like weeks. When in actuality it had been 5 MONTHS! <worst daughter award for this girl> Not having access to a laptop had its pros and cons. I felt that I really opened up at school more. I definitely ate more fried … Continue reading

The Naked Truth

“Ibu, saya telanjang!,” a phrase I struggled to get out as I stumbled to cover my body and clumsily reached for my towel at the same time. “Mom, I’m naked!,” are 3 words I’d never thought I’d have to utter in the same sentence while in Indonesia. a big bite of that American pie

Sure I have days when I’m confused, or annoyed, or just unfocused. And just when those days seem to have nothing else better to offer, there always seems to be an unavoidable cloud of smoke I pass through while on my bike, inevitably inhaling that oh-so-fresh puff of burning garbage. Bali, Check!

Bali, Check!

Vacation break seemed to arrive just as abrupt as it ended. Right before I left my site for 2 weeks, … Continue reading

Mad-island, T-give, & Vamp-baby

Between the heat of Madura, delectable mashed potatoes (my favors) from Thanksgiving dinner, and part one movie of Breaking Dawn–the first of the last cult followed guilt-free addicting films to the Twilight Saga novels—this weekend was one big heat exhausted, food comma, vampire baby-attack blur! It started off with my trip up to Madura to … Continue reading

Energy Boosters from the past 2 months!

While I’ve been busy eating mangos like it’s my secondary project, I’ve fallen a tad behind on my blog commitment. Kok lama!, (an expression which means, it’s been a long time!), and that is exactly how it feels as I log on to my blog site for the first time in 2 months! After a … Continue reading

What Can’t you do with an Avocado?

What Can’t you do with an Avocado?

….well, frankly there are lots of things you can’t actually do with an avocado, but for the last three days I challenged myself to see what tasty dishes I could prepare with all fruit ingredients, featured appearance made by, the avocado. Most religions practice a form of fasting for many reasons. Maybe to renew clarity … Continue reading
